School-based Learning Support Units are for pupils at risk of exclusion, providing separate short-term teaching and support programmes tailored to the needs of difficult pupils. They aim to keep pupils in school and working whilst their behaviour problems are tackled, helping to re-integrate them into mainstream classes as quickly as possible. The self-contained Units are small, taking between six and ten pupils at any one time and have a high staff to pupil ratio. Most Units take pupils from the school in which they are based, whilst a few provide for pupils from several schools. Most pupils attend the Units on a part-time basis to meet specific needs, a few, whose needs will be greater, attend full-time. Learning Support Units work closely with Learning Mentors, often line-managed by the same staff. 13 Secondary Schools currently have some sort of Learning Support Unit provision on site. It is expected that from September 2002 the provision will be extended to all 15 secondary schools.
